Approach

CHOICE seeks to contribute to sustainable health systems that maintain good lives for elderly populations and their families by actively involving general practitioners, nurses and people at risk of osteoporosis throughout the project. Through its innovative and cross-disciplinary approach, CHOICE aims to improve early detection and prevention of osteoporotic fractures in routine care.

Our approach consist of five steps, which are all designed to support a feasible and sustainable implementation of FREM_ML. These five steps will involve the following:

  1. Definition of high imminent fracture risk by validating the optimal thresholds for prescription of preventive DXA screening.
  2. Identifying and exploring preferences and perspectives of service users and community members, as well as potential barriers, user preferences, and system requirements for the successful implementation of FREM_ML in general practice.
  3. Implementation and integration of FREM_ML into the existing Danish medical software system.
  4. Assessing the effect of FREM_ML in preventing major osteoporotic fractures in general practices in Denmark using a cluster-randomized design.
  5. Adaptation of FREM_ML to the data and software systems used in Sweden and Norway. This step include feasibility studies building on the Danish feasibility studies as well as evaluation of the use of FREM_ML and treatment rates before and after the implementation of FREM_ML.
