The CHOICE project is well underway
Read more in this first newsletter to all involved in the CHOICE project.
We are pleased to share the first updatesfrom the CHOICE project. A number ofimportant milestones have already beenreached, and the work is progressing well inDenmark while preparations are ongoing inSweden and Norway.
Project milestones:
- Partner agreement signed – the formalframework for collaboration is in place.
- Project website launched – you canfollow progress and find informationhere: https://choice.rsyd.dk/
- Teams platform established – ensuringsmooth internal communication. If youdo not have access please let us know.
Progress in Denmark:
- User panel established: The DanishCHOICE user panel has been set up andafter some online meetings the firstworkshop was held in Odense lastFriday. 8 patients with osteoporosisparticipated and Sebastian (SE) joinedus from Sweden to share perspectives. It was an inspiring day with livelydiscussion about being at risk and howto engage users in the CHOICE project.
- Work packages advancing: We haveworked on a more detailed project planfor the milestones and activities in theCHOICE project which we will sharewith you later. Emilie (DK) has startedinterviews with GPs and nurses as partof WP1. Jens Jakob (DK) has joined theteam as postdoc and will contribute toWP1.
- The validation and calibration ofFREM_ML in WP1 is also progressing asplanned and we look forward to presentthe optimized model when we meet.WP1, WP2 and WP3 is planned indetails and coordination has been donewith the responsible WP leaders.
Team updates:
- Line (DK), former project coordinatorhas gone on maternity leave.
- We are pleased to welcome AssociateProfessor Pernille Ravn Jakobsen (DK),who will work on user involvement inWP2, the design and development inWP3 and act as project coordinatorduring Line’s absence.
Next steps:
- In Sweden, activities are expected tostart around January 2026 and inNorway from April 2026.
- We are working on the projectorganization, including steering groupand an executive advisory board. Thenext partner meeting is being planned.
- A physical meeting for all partners isplanned in Denmark in March 2026. ADoodle will be send out soon.
We thank you all for your engagement andlook forward to continuing thecollaboration.
Warm regards,
The CHOICE project team

The CHOICE project is progressing
We are pleased to share recent progress across the CHOICE work packages. The project isdeveloping and several scientific and organizational milestones have been reached.
A steering group meeting has been held with participation from Mattias (SWE), Mari (NO), Uffe, Katrine and Pernille (DK). The meeting focused on alignment across national work streams, coordination of timelines toward the 2026 start in Norway and Sweden.
A scientific paper on the FREM_ML model has recently been published: Link to paper.
FREM_ML now has a logo.
Find it in the Teams folder.

Project milestones:
WP 1 – Model optimization and validation
Emilie (PhD student, DK) has finalized the cross-validation and concordance of FREM model diagnoses across primary and secondary care. A manuscript is currently in preparation.
Jens-Jakob and Jan (DK) are focusing on feature reduction and optimization of lookback periods to further refine the FREM_ML model for use in general practice. Parallel efforts are ongoing to validate the model using NOCTE data. These steps will ensure the model’s robustness and clinical relevance across healthcare sectors.
WP2 – user involvement
The CHOICE panel met with online with Anne and Pernille (DK) to discuss strategies for recruiting users to ensure that the model is meaningful for patients as end-users. Recruitment materials are in preparation in close collaboration with the panel, and recruitment will start in February 2026.
A master’s student Michelle, has joined the project to conduct individual interviews with end-users to explore their perspectives when risk of fracture is predicted using a machine learning model in general practice. Emilie has finished the individual interviewswith GPs and nurses and the analysis toidentify barriers and facilitators forimplementing FREM_ML in general practice isongoing.
A workshop in Q1 2026 will bring togetherDanish GPs and nurses to discuss findings fromEmilie’s qualitative work and to start the co-design of a user journey that integratesseamlessly into clinical practice.
WP3 – integration of FREM_ML in Denmark
WP3 is planned to start in January 2026. Apostdoc from the Mærsk McKinney MøllerInstitute, SDU will join the team in Q1 2026.Preparatory discussion have been held toensure alignment across partners and workstreams.
Dissemination and feedback:
The CHOICE project has been presented at twoDanish research conferences, where wereceived valuable feedback – particularlyconcerning the ethical dilemmas of detectingfracture risks before symptoms occur.
Upcoming events:
The physical project kick off meeting will takeplace on March 4th 2026 in Odense. An officialinvitation and program will be send out soon.
Thank you all for your ongoing engagementand we are looking forward to se you alltogether in Denmark in March.
Wishing you many warm Christmas greetingsand a happy New Year.

Kick-off meeting and continued progressin model validation and user involvement
We are pleased to share up-to-date news from the CHOICE project including recentdevelopments in validation, user involvement, and cross-country collaboration.
In March 2026, the CHOICE team met in personfor a kick-off meeting in Odense, bringingtogether partners across countries anddisciplines.

Prior to the kick-off meeting, the Swedish andDanish WP1 teams held a pre-meeting focusedon knowledge exchange and mutual learningfrom the Swedish fracture prediction models. The purpose was to discuss methodologicalapproaches, share experiences from theSwedish work, and explore how these insightcould inform the ongoing validation anddevelopment of FREM_ML within CHOICE.
The kick-off meeting itself provided a valuableopportunity to strengthen collaboration acrosscountries and disciplines. Throughpresentations, workshops and discussions, partners shared progress, discussed ongoingactivities, and reflected jointly on the nextsteps in model validation and userinvolvement.
Project milestones:
WP 1 – Model optimization and validation
The FREM_ML model is nearing completion, and a script will be shared with partners inNorway and Sweden in April 2026.
WP2 – user involvement
The Danish CHOICE panel has been engagedin workshops and as co-researchers. They havecontributed to the development ofa recruitment strategy and supported therecruitment of 12 potential end-users(individuals not diagnosed with osteoporosisbut at risk of fractures). These participantshave been included in a vignette basedqualitative study aimed at identifyinguser needs when a fracture risk predictionmodel based on machine learning isintroduced in general practice.
In Norway the first member of the CHOICEpanel has been recruited and planning ofactivities in Norway and Sweden has beeninitiated.
WP3 – integration of FREM_ML in Denmark
Two postdocs from the Mærsk McKinneyMøller Institute, SDU - Frankie Spencer andRuhollah Jamali joined the project. They bringexpertise in the development and integrationof AI-based decision support in clinical
practice.
Initial use case scenarios for integratingFREM_ML into general practice have beendeveloped. This work follows an iterativeprocess, continuously refined based onfeedback from users.
Nordforsk Report submitted:
The first project report has been submitted, covering activities in 2025.
Thank you all for your ongoing engagementand we are looking forward to se you alltogether in Denmark in March.
Wishing you many warm Christmas greetingsand a happy New Year.
